Senior Citizens Group
Greetings members,
We are 412 in strength now and growing.
First a quick recall of 2007, January to December. There were joyful moments to remember. We were up on Petronas Twin Towers skybridge, rode the "Eye on Malaysia", watched free movies at GSC, trekked organic farms at Bangi & D-Paradise Malacca, visited Bank Negara, Royal Mint & Port Klang Free Trade Zone, toured Kelantan/Trengganu/Pahang, partied at our anniversary celebrations, ventured further to Hanoi/Ho Chi Minh City ( Vietnam ) & Singapore , and finally for a good cause, hosted a charity food bazaar in December. Entertaining, exciting and last, but not least, happy.
Members who have yet to join in for that spree of fun, enjoy life and meet new people, come away with us for that rewarding and engaging experience. Live in the present.
As we have said many times, we welcome you to come forward, give us new ideas and fresh leads. Tell us 'here is where I wish to go, this is the contact I have'. Put our heads together, we shall try to work with your suggestions and the end result, there is something to see, to admire, to feast, to do. Leave it to us to put the act together.
The activities calendar for 2008 has been drawn. Refer page below. Events and activities are all subject to change due to weather conditions and other circumstances. Keep in touch and watch out for Wargamas news and updates on your email.
Taking this opportunity, your leading team wishes all members a very happy New Year 2008.

A TRIP TO KUKUP, JOHOR
Date: 8 Sept 2008
Kukup, here we come! Early this morning, 30 wargamas excitedly assemble at TTDI Community Centre for a trip to the south western tip of Johor. But first we must “fill up”. And this we did with dim sum in Seri Petaling soon after leaving TTDI. Contented, we settled down in the bus. It was also the time to exchange news with friends and introduce ourselves to new members.
First stop of the day was Air Keroh and to a shop which sells birds nests. We were offered a sip or two to sample. Then we were off to Yong Peng where we had lunch before shopping for biscuits, sauces, tidbits and a wide range of local products. A southbound trip is incomplete without visiting Ayer Hitam, famous for its pottery crafts. Feeling satiated we headed further south towards Kukup.
Kukup, a quaint fishing village, has plenty to offer tourists. There are many places of accommodation available and a wide variety of dried sea food products for sale. Word travels fast. Soon after we had checked in, fruit vendors and sales people with dried sea food came a-calling. There were pineapples, duku langsat, chempedak and pulasan for sale and Wargamas did not disappoint them!
Dinner was barbequed sea food served in the veranda. Cool sea breeze provided the ambience for a leisurely meal. ”Free and easy” after dinner meant karaoke session, watching TV, playing board games or simply relaxing in air conditioned comfort of the room.

Next morning after a good breakfast we were ready for the day’s activities. A short boat ride brought us to the “kelongs” where we saw many types of fish, including the puffer fish, reared for export. The Johor National Park in Pulau Kukup was the next stop. This is one of the largest uninhabited mangrove islands in the world. Walking along the wooden pathway we could see the flora and fauna of the mangrove forest. From the suspension bridge we could see mainland Kukup.
There were lots to pack when we returned to the resort. After a delicious lunch in town, we were ready to hit the road to go home, but not before a short stop in Seremban for tea. When we reached TTDI it was 5pm. We were tired but happy and had throughly enjoyed ourselves.

WARGAMAS TTDI 5th ANNIVERSARY
Date: 5th July, 2008
For the fifth consecutive year, about 160 members of WargaMas TTDI congregate at Muhibbah Restaurant to celebrate their 5 th anniversary as well as to have fun and make merry.
Members came brimming with excitement and anticipation of what would be in store, as they collected their door gifts. Familiar faces on the neighbourhood circuit were a welcome sight. Distinguished guests for the occasion included YB Lim Lip Eng (MP for Segambut), as well as Tuan Hj Abdul Latif Mohd Som (TTDI RA Chairman), Mah Huey Fong, S. Murugiah, Francis Tan, and Ron Peris, all from TTDIRA EXCO. There was an array of hope and comfort as YB Lim Lip Eng mentioned in his short address that the welfare of senior citizens would not be forgotten in his agenda for the constituency.

‘Jamuan’ was a sumptuous spread with Mr Leow of Muhibbah always ensuring that hot replenishments came in as soon as food ran low. The afternoon’s activities included Lucky Draws, Treasure Bag & Coins games, awards for Mr. & Madam Colourful, culminating in the unveiling of TTDI WargaMas’ own theme song with lyrics written by our Jenny Oo and sung to the tune of ‘Seasons in the Sun’. Members led by Puan Zuraida gave a good rendition of the Malay number ‘Madu & Racun’ and the Chinese song ‘Xiao Cheng Gu Shi’ was no disappointment either.
There were many Lucky Draws featuring valuable prizes throughout the afternoon and some lucky members even won prizes just by occupying the right seat at the right time.
With applauses all round, good-byes and cries of “till we meet again”, the party came to an end with acknowledgements of appreciation to generous sponsors, without whose support, the anniversary would not have come to another great resounding success.
WargaMas TTDI conveyed their heartfelt thanks to the following sponsors (in alphabetical order) for all contribution of gifts/prizes ,:-

7D6N TAIWAN ROUND ISLAND
On 17 th April 2008
A group of 18 WargaMas from Taman Tun including 2 dutiful daughters, who accompanied their mothers, went on a 7D6N round island Springtime tour of Taiwan .
Starting from Taipei , the group traveled southwest to Taichung, along a coastal scenic road to Kaohsiung, a 6-hour drive to Hualien on the eastern coast. On Day 5, our coach wound its way along the Suhua National Road, a roller-coaster highway with crash breakers – a cliff hanger with the Pacific Ocean roaring about 300 meters below the highway, to Yilan and then northward bound to Taipei via Chiufen, driving through the newly opened tunnel (somewhat similar to our Smart Tunnel) of 12.9 km, longest in the world. For those afraid of heights, advice from the guide was to sit on the left side of the coach.
The tour was comprehensive enough, being packed with lots of sightseeing - to Democracy Hall, Martyr’s Shrine, Fisherman’s Wharf, Sun Moon Lake, Peacock Garden, hotspring, extensive temple complex and monastry, Taroko National Park, Hualien Ocean fun park, resort farm, old streets high up in Chiufen. Being springtime, flowers were in full bloom everywhere we went, roses, lilies, lotuses, hydrangeas and a lots more.
We dined at the base of 101 shopping mall, dipped in the Chi Lin Fong hotspring which was relaxing and revitalizing for both body and mind. We were entertained at the Ami Aboriginal Village that showcased their culture through dance performances by charming tribal girls in traditional costumes. Our careful and knowledgeable coach cum driver was thoughtful enough to stop several times on the way for us to sample and buy from local farmers fruits such as ‘jambu merah’, mango, custard apple, sweet potato and maize. They were big, juicy, sweet and cheap. A tour to Taiwan would be incomplete without visiting its popular night markets. There we indulged ourselves in food specialities such as stinky bean curd ‘tau fo’, pearl milk tea, iron eggs, sea shells, beef noodles, sausages, etc..
A morning visit to Hualien Ocean Park took us to second childhood as we sat in the ferry wheel looking far out to the ocean and ride the carousel. We watched performances of sea lions, comedians and arobats. It was fun too at the Shangri-La Leisure Resort Farm where we put up a night. Atop a hill, trekking through orchards and fruit trees, it was lush greenery close to nature. At night after dinner, we sang ‘Rasa Sayang’, enjoyed long forgotten games such as spinning tops and released lighted flying lanterns with our written wishes, and made glutinous rice balls, a sweet delicacy. There were other tour groups from Taiwan and Singapore who participated in the top spinning competition but our WargaMmas teams emerged champs as well as third placing. TTDI WargaMas boleh !
Especially spectacular was the view of Taroko National Park and Gorge. With the surrounding tranquility of the valley below, we were awed by majestic mountains and rolling greenery, pebbled clear streams that flowed alongside the winding road, narrow tracks that cut into the sides of mountains, far distant pavilions and forked waterfalls high above. The air was crisp, cool and refreshing plus that cup of Nescafe 3 in 1, feeling was great – one of those memorable moments in Taiwan .
CHARITY FOOD BAZAAR FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Date: Sunday, 9 December 2007
Time: 6:30am - 12:00 noon
Venue: Taman Lembah Kiara Carpark
This particular Sunday was no ordinary
Sunday at the Taman Lembah Kiara carpark. In addition to the normal weekend walkers was a charity food bazaar organized by TTDI RA Wargamas for the first time in aid of a number of old folks’ homes in the Klang Valley. DBKL was also on hand with a stall to publicise their city planning activities in Wilayah.
The bazaar showed everybody’s involvement and commitment via pots, trays and containers of home-cooked food, ‘kueh muih’, pastries and confectionary. To stimulate tastebuds there was an assortment of pickled and preserved fruits. From nasi lemak, mee siam, pie tee to ‘tarboleh’ (an unusual salad of possibly Middle East origin), the variety was tantalising. With soyabean drinks, ‘tau fo fah and ‘teh tarik’ with the umph, the food bazaar turned into a one-stop station for breakfast. The first sale at 6.30 a.m. was a piece of craft patchwork skilfully stitched by a senior member of Wargamas and that started the ball rolling for charity.

Other than the array of food, sale of potted plants and jumble wares also garnered some support. Even the children played their part as two bright little ones went round the park with their baskets of cookies for sale. Who can turn down these young helpers? Within half an hour, they returned to the stall with gleaming faces for job well done... they sold all their cookies.

Weather was kind and there being always a joy to do good, volunteers and helpers had fun, danced and sang to the accompaniment of musical beats (mumbo & the salsa), swinging and smiling. As the carpark filled with both walkers and patrons to the bazaar, cliques of friends gathered to lend their support.

Home-cooked food which offered the best in quality and value sold like hot cakes, finishing well before noon . With team work and concerted effort, the year-end charity bash for Wargamas could not have gone out with a bigger bang. Sale proceeds and donations surpassed expectation and target, and these would be formally channelled to designated old folks’ homes.
The homes that benefitted from this are the Sri Setia Old Folks Home in Sg. Way, Caring Homes in Kajang and the Selangor Cheshire Home.
A special vote of thanks goes to DBKL for providing the tents, tables, chairs and PA system. Acknowledgements and due recognition also go to the following institutions, corporate and private businesses for their sponsorship in cash or in kind (to name a few):
1. CIMB
2. Restoran Puteri
